by Tiffani “Living La Vida Bathing Suit” Michele

Dear, sweet, delusional, and incorrect Erika really threw down the gauntlet yesterday when she blogged “I Hate Summer“. Haterz gonna hate, I know, but she left me no choice but to retaliate with my own post, “I Love Summer” to show her the errors of her ways. Because really, I read her words in shock and awe, shaking my head and mouthing the words “nooooooo!” while raising my fists into the air like a supplicant for correct seasonal priorities. It’s nothing personal, I suppose, and nothing that can’t be fixed over a late night of beer drinking and shots of whiskey. But still. I was offended. Hating Summer?! What?! Who could possibly?! Can you even say those words together?!

I love Summer so much I want to get drunk off vodka infused watermelon, and fondle and caress it and maybe even grind up against it until we’re both tired and drunk and a little sunburned and pass out to the light of fireflies dancing around us. So here’s my own list of summery love:

1) So Much More Light! I don’t struggle to wake up early like I do in the dark hours of winter, because the sun is already shining in my window beckoning me to hop out of bed and get my party on. It shines all day long without any chance of snowstorms or weeks and weeks of gray days. It even stays light waaaaay into traditional night. There is finally enough time in the day to do everything…wake up early, get shit done by afternoon, take a little nap, wake up, and still have more than half a day’s light to play around with. Yes Please!

2) Break From Cooking! No one wants to use an oven or stove when it’s hot. That’s where grills and men come in handy. In the summer, you can hand off a plate of raw meat and it comes back to you in the form of a fresh dinner made by a man cooking on a grill. Cooking and baking goes down by at least half thanks to cold pasta salads, fruit dips, man grilling, pot luck neighbor picnics, and yogurt based foods. Being single has put a wrench into my plans, actually, but that’s what Craigslist is for. “Wanted: man who likes to grill. I will supply raw meat and veggies in exchange for a nicely grilled dinner every night. Knowledge of grilled desert recipes a plus. None of this is code for “I really mean I want to have freaky sex with a stranger”. Only those serious grillers need to contact me.”

3) Bathing Suits, Boats/Beach and Beers! If there’s any way to spend a day better than this, I don’t know what it is.

(body by hooping, y’all, and I’m not even kidding!)

4) Summer Sports Rock Hard! Fall and Winter have sports that are boring to watch, boring to play, involve lots of layers, and have a high degree of hurt involved. Touch football always ends up tackle. Hockey players wear too many layers to make it interesting for us women folk, if you know what I’m saying. Skiing also involves to many layers and way to many chances to run into trees and die of massive internal injuries. But summer is all about play! Swimming, volleyball, surfing, and skateboarding. Who doesn’t love the laid back nature of that?! All done in varying forms of dishabille. Rawr!

5) It’s Simply Magical. All my favorite memories come from the summertime. No school, no bedtime, spending time with friends, going on summer trips, eating popsicles all day long, summer loving with the star crossed boyfriend that I knew I’d never see again, lounging at the beach eating nachos and hot dogs, sun kissed hair, and fireflies. Ah, fireflies. My kids had never seen them before last week. But as we spent time with cousins in Georgia, they experienced the magic for the first time. It made my mama heart grow three sizes bigger.

Seriously. This is life, people. Magical, awesome, simple, pure. Brought to you by summer!

What are some of your favorite things about the best season ever (summer, of course)?!

Oh sweet Tiffani… You may have pushed me towards the middle.

  2. July 3, 2012

I agree times a million. I’d be perfectly happy with summer year round. I love all the fresh food, long days and the magic of it all.

I gasped and my mouth dropped open when I read your kids never had seen fireflies before…I didn’t know that was possible?! That is our main purpose at night…to catch fireflies…that is a good hour or more of entertainment….a life without fireflies…that would be sad!

  4. July 3, 2012

i have a love hate relationship with summer, so i’m in both camps.
actually, maybe it’s just my location. i’m thinking a location closer to a salty ocean breeze would definitely put summer at the top of my list, because i agree with everything you just said.
damn. and here i thought i was a hater.

  5. July 3, 2012

I love being barefoot 90% of the time. There’s nothing more elemental than feet firmly planted on the ground.

  6. July 3, 2012

I love watching everything grow and browsing on all of the edible backyards. I like hosing the kids off and getting them out. I love how my son’s skin goes all brown like mine never has. I like how my daughter doesn’t understand why we’re eating dinner when she sun’s still shining, so we go eat outside. I love thunderstorms! The beach. Love the beach. Water slides. Watching my two year old catch her first firefly. Burning things and melting marshmallows. But I love all the seasons, when I’m in the happy mood.

Summers in London are so not like this!

  9. July 4, 2012

Summer rocks! The beach, fun in the ocean, the fireflies, the peaches, the watermelon, the list can go on and on! Except for heat waves like right now, though, I’m with you that summer is awesome.

  10. July 4, 2012

reason 3 n 5 exactly and thats why its my fav season!!! :D to the utter amazement of so many ..
and congrats of being fp :)

  11. July 4, 2012

Looks like summer at your country is fun! Out here in Mumbai (In India, FYI :-p) summer means irritated cab drivers and an even more irritated me, Pissed off bus conductors and an angrier me. LOL. Its on the coast and its tropical. It means SWEAT. Big time! Sweat that one can feel inching its way to your undie every walking moment! Also, it means the merciless sun. On the very hot days the temperature is around 45 degrees Celsius. Dunno how that spells out in Fahrenheit! On more bearable days its around 30-35 degrees.

How I wish i could feel you summers!!!

  12. July 4, 2012

The last line is supposed to be : How I wish i could feel your summers!!!

I forgot the ‘r’ in your. sounds weird:-D

  13. July 4, 2012

Makes me reminisce to the days when I was a little boy. Summers are great, whether it rains or the sunshines. Lovely story.

  14. July 4, 2012

I’m a Fall/Winter gal myself but then again I’m also a Washingtonian/night shift worker so I’m pretty much a cave creature who is afraid of sunlight. Nice post. Congrats on FP as well.

being barefoot all the time, the smell of coppertone, and honeysuckles, early summer mornings on my porch, sun-kissed faces, bleach blonde hair, flowers, sundresses, strappy shoes, fireworks, and the beach:)

  17. July 4, 2012

your post was so fun and charming. you made some excellent points to the magic of summer. I am wearing my swimsuit as we speak, even though it’s 8 in the morning. but after a sweaty hot run this morning, i am ready for the water soon. happy summering! :)

  18. July 4, 2012

Summer gives you a reason to travel, travel, travel!
Great post! A fresh perspective on how great summer is. Agree with all five. =>

  19. July 4, 2012

Another plus: you can wear shorts and sandals all the time, even while enjoying the evening breeze! Living in the northeast, it’s a wonderful relief from the shirt+sweater+coat+scarf+earmuffs+hat+mittens+pants+boots outfit required in the winter months.

  20. July 4, 2012

I completely agree. Summer is amazing :D Love this post

  21. July 4, 2012

Summer rocks. I agree totally. We just went firefly catching the other night!

You got it right in every way! Summer is really the only time you can lay down and do nothing during the day! Summer is the best! And fireflies are amazing magic bugs!
    Great post! Congrats!

  24. July 4, 2012

I am so glad that you took a stand! If you hate summer, I have to think you’re just not doing it right. The long fat days that go on for miles, boats, beaches, real tomatoes, watermelon, corn, peaches, water balloon fights, picnic blankets, fireworks, popsicles, fireflies and butterflies, driving at night with the music blaring and the windows down and your arm making waves in the soft air – that still makes me feel like I’m 16, 30 years after the fact. I could go on and on and on, but I’ll leave some stuff for other defenders of summertime.

    • July 4, 2012

So true! I love singing along to my music in the car, growing my own veggies, long early morning rides with my horse, and evenings spent walking the beach. A jump into the lake after a long hot run is also up there!

  25. July 4, 2012

Cute post! I also love summer, it’s my favourite time of year for many of the reasons you’ve listed! Congrats on Freshly Pressed.

  26. July 4, 2012

Probably no comments are from the region of tropic of cancer. I live near it, in Eastern India and the part where I live, Summer is pretty hard. People die in the heat.

But as you took a stand of not hating summer, I should also say that I do have a lot of great memory of summer such as Mangoes, Football (Soccer) and all the awesome liquid concoctions folks drink here…

I do wish I could enjoy summer as you did and do. Regards! :-)

    • July 5, 2012

Lol. Here I was thinking i’m the only guy from the tropics:-)

I know what you talking about mate!

  27. July 4, 2012

Great post! I grew up in Canada and miss light in the sky until 10:00 p.m. (although black flies, not so much.) Love getting dressed in summer — T-shirt/shorts/sandals. Done. Better yet, a dress and shoes. How quick is that? I think summer always has a bittersweet quality because it goes by so damn fast. We barely get three months of it, then six months (or worse) of cold/rain/snow/ice. Bleh.

In my life I have been blessed in owning a lakefront home on Cedar Creek Lake in East Texas. Having the toys goes with the blessing in a boat and two Sea-Do GTX’s limited. My lifestyle is more tame than these pictures but still a wonderful part of my life. YES! You tell ‘em! Winter is in the “Hate and Fear” category…

  46. July 4, 2012

Well written! I completely agree with reasons 1 & 3. I love summer for two reasons: when everything looks bathed in light you feel as though all disparities have been evened out. Second, I love showing off all my summery dresses as opposed to mounds of dreary-looking warm clothes!

  47. July 4, 2012

The best part about this post is the first picture; the dude on the left looks like he’s kicking a field goal with that chick’s head! ;) Congrats on being FP’ed!

If you love summer then you will love my home country Thailand all year round. Strictly speaking, we have only three seasons: the green season (June-October), the cool season (November-February) and the flowering season (March-May). Never frost in my home town Chiang Mai. The girls never walk in the sun, we stay in the shade, and we do not like a tan, some buy whitening lotions.

    Ketsanee

  74. July 5, 2012

You make some good points but Fall is such a great season. Crisp air, best holidays, turning leaves and autumnal spices. Can’t beat that!

Also, it’s so freaking humid where I live that you’re basically covered in a perma-sweat whenever you step outside. Even if you’re standing stock still. Maybe if I spent summer in Maine…

  75. July 5, 2012

This cheered me up. I love every season :) Winter for the snuggles by the fireside, blankets and mugs of steaming hot drinks. Skiing, snow, cold bright walks, August for the leaves, the walks in the wood, the suddenly colder days, pulling out your winter wardrobe, the fresh air, and the rain (Yes i’m odd. I love the rain)… Then spring. Bright fresh days, the animals the sudden buzz in the air that things are staring up again after the darker winter months. The April showers, (that rain again) the early flowers coming into bud, the frost in the mornings, the sense of life all around… and Summer. The sun, sea, sex, bright days, hotter nights, late evenings sat outside, the BBQ’s and joy that everyone exudes… In my opinion. You gotta love them all. We’re all far to pessimistic, look at the positives of every season. They’re all uniquely beautiful!

  76. July 5, 2012

Well composed and well clicked !!

  77. July 5, 2012

I just realized recently that we’re extremely lucky to live in a country that’s summer almost all year round. All you need is your umbrella and flipflops, and you’re good. :) Yeah, summer all the way, baby!

  78. July 5, 2012

As much as I do agree with your reasons why summer is great, I prefer the winter. Trying to cool down is a nuisance, especially if it is very humid. Also, I enjoy staying inside a nice warm room, bundled up, and watching the snow fall outside. All seasons have their pros and cons. Great article!

Great post! You look amazing. We live in Southern California – and I love it – but sadly there are no fireflies.

  86. July 5, 2012

I couldn’t agree more. Love this!!

  87. July 5, 2012

I prefer summer over any season as well. Of course there are drawbacks.

    1) I am very pale so sunscreen is a must. Sunscreen also makes me break out! 2) American humidity (currently in Spain and I do not have to deal with it, it is awesome!). 3) Mosquitoes. I hate, hate, hate those things! 4) Thunderstorms. I know some people enjoy them but I’ve always been terrified of them!

However all the other reasons you mentioned–summer sports, more light (doesn’t get dark until 10 PM in Spain!), lighter clothing (does anybody seriously like bundling up for winter? I don’t!), the magical feeling, fireflies… oh and how can we forget the flowers/green leaves on the trees! :D The Earth comes back to life!

  88. July 5, 2012

YES!!! I absolutely love summer, and basically spend the whole year waiting for it to come around again. It´s one of the reasonas I try and leave scotland this time of year… so I can actually enjoy a summer with sun!!

  98. July 6, 2012

It depends on where you leave. If you live in a hot country, like Southern Italy, it is not for me: a deadly combination of heat and humidity (you can literally die of it).
But if you live somewhere like England, then summer can be magic indeed.

  99. July 6, 2012

Agreed! Although winter does have some beauty to it. :)

  100. July 6, 2012

This is a great post and you make a lot of good points; but truth is, Winter Is Coming and I cannot wait. True I love to grill and I wake up easier for work when it is already light out; but I like cooking indoors too and I don’t wanna wake up for work. Yea, it is nice that all the ladies have decided to wear basically nothing for three or four months; but hey, I am not a pervert and I don’t want to be forced to check all the ladies out. And when I try to sneak upstairs to cuddle next to The Wife at six am and pretend it is one am after I fell asleep watching cartoons; it’d be nice if she didnt know I was lying because the songbirds are singing their dawn tune. And whatever evil gods decided it should be a billion degrees in my car at eight thirty when I leave for work and midnight when I leave the second job for home and even hotter during the day; well, they can take summer and shove it.

  101. July 6, 2012

I actually disagree , I think all seasons have great moments and as I am the biggest Christmas fan ever I love winter … snowy walks and hot drinks, writing and getting cards, giving presents and spending days doing nothing but eating treats

  102. July 6, 2012

Aw, man! There are many things that I love about the summer. Schmoozing with old friends-esp. if they’re female, Jimmy Buffett, or Jimi Hendrix, barbecue, martinis and margaritas, hot babes baring all at the beach, having new clients, and me being a (hopefully well-paid and full-time) photographer, the summer gives us more access to more things that the other seasons will not do (esp. if you live up north), driving your whip (car, that is) with ALL the windows down and the stereo blasting (does “Summertime” by Will smith ring any bells?).

It’s over 100 here in Detroit, 110 at the most. It hasn’t been that hot over here since ’88. But I didn’t bitch about it too much, after spending a week in Alabama and Georgia a few summers ago, I can take the heat much better now thanks to that experience.

I’ll tell ya the truth, if the conditions were in my favor, I’d move elsewhere in the country that is virtually warm all year long. But that’s just me.

Love your post and I too love summer. Although in the UK it can be such a disappointment…. But on the days when the sun comes out it is one of the most visually stunning places in the world. Energy just seems to lift. Similar to you, the happiest memories of my life seem to have occurred in the summer months, where life is just easier. Fantastic pictures!

What a nice girl in yellow swimsuit… Congratulations. Summer is for you a very pleasant season, with great sensations of tanned sexy skins… waouh.

You know my favorite things about summer? The smell of freshly mowed lawn and the sounds of birds waking you up in the morning. Hummingbirds flitting around and children playing until late in the evening.
